Hostel Territory

So we've set off to Barcelona to live the dream and open our very own hostel. We're keeping this journal online to keep everyone updated of our progress, adventures and mishaps navigating Barcelona's booming tourism industry, Spanish bureaucracy, and daily life in Catalunya.

We spent last weekend in London doing some hostel research. We had the good fortune of meeting a man on vacation here in Barcelona that owns a well established chain of hostels in London (Astor Hostels). He got his start in the 70s, so he's a little ahead of the curve. It was a great opportunity to see their places and hear about his experiences. We visited two other places (The Generator and Globetrotters Inn) to see their operations. We met with managers at both places who were super willing to dispense practical advice. It was little different than our experiences interviewing Barcelona hostel managers. I guess they're not as threatened by Somnio up in London (yet!). It was also nice to catch up with friends and site-see a bit.

Back to the search here in Barcelona. We saw a place today that could be interesting for Somnio Hostel #1. The owner intended to build and run a hotel, but realized that he has no experience or interest in the business! The construction will be done April/May. The problem is that he's thinking marble and waterfalls, and we're thinking bunk beds and backpacks. So there's a bit of a disparity between his price and, well, reality. So hopefully he'll get a clue, and we can agree on something. I'll keep you posted.

Networking events continue. So between fruit supplement vendors and professional bassoonists, we're building quite a cast of characters. Lee and I keep imagining what a party would be like with these goofs, and it's pretty hilarious. Invites to follow shortly.
